Current affairs :

1)Germany weighs a more muscular foreign policy

German leaders are pushing a vigorous new case that it is time for their nation to find a more muscular voice in foreign affairs, even suggesting that Germany should no longer reflexively avoid some military deployments, as it did in Libya almost three years ago.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has yet to weigh in on the use of the military, and it is not clear how willing the German public is to embrace a more assertive posture. But a variety of senior officials are urging a rethinking of the country’s assumptions about its diplomatic and military role.

2)Protesters block voting in chaotic Thai election

Opposition protesters prevented voting at thousands of polling stations in Thailand on Sunday, triggering angry scenes in the capital over an election that plunged the strife-stricken kingdom into political limbo.
Despite weeks of mass street demonstrations aimed at forcing her from office, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was widely expected to extend her billionaire family’s decade-long winning streak at the ballot box.

3)TTP names Imran Khan in panel

Amid reports that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Saturday formed a committee which includes Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson Imran Khan for peace talks, Mr. Khan played it down by saying that the TTP should select their own Taliban representatives for the peace talks.
In a statement, he said the PTI had full faith in the four-member committee announced by the government. Mr. Khan added, “However, we will discuss how PTI can be of further assistance to further the dialogue in our core committee meeting on Monday.” Apart from Mr. Khan, the five members named by TTP includes Jamiat Ulema Islam-Samiul Haq group (JUI-S) chief Maulana Samiul Haq, Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Mufti Kifayatullah, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) provincial chief Professor Mohammad Ibrahim and the former cleric of Lal Masjid Maulana Abdul Aziz.

4)Rate hike, a fallout of Urjit panel report

Much has been said about the unexpected hike in the repo rate announced by the Reserve Bank of India in the third quarter policy statement released on Tuesday last. The revised repo rate is 8 per cent. The general feeling is one of unpleasant surprise to many, among the vast majority, who were not anticipating any change.
After the announcement, however, there has been a greater equanimity. The stock markets have not responded as adversely as they would have in the face of an unexpected rate hike.
Besides, the surprise element has been integral to recent monetary policy announcements, and it is not something new to this policy statement. According to this view, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan is not the first to announce monetary measures, which surprised the markets either in their timing or go against the grain of conventional wisdom.
Previous governors too have used the surprise element: announced measures outside the policy dates or gone against what the markets — as gleaned from surveys — think should happen. There have been instances even in the recent past when the central bank acted without notice, to put up, for example, interest rate defence for the falling rupee.
Incidentally, in the December policy statement, the RBI has explicitly stated that monetary measures need not always be announced on policy dates.

5)I may not have a billion dollars in R&D… but I know my market conditions
