1)There is no Modi wave: Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that there is no Narendra Modi wave across the country, including in Karnataka.Mr. Siddaramaiah, who spoke to The Hindu here on Monday, said the reference to the Narendra Modi wave was only in the media. “My assessment is that the National Democratic Alliance will not be successful in forming a government at the Centre.” The chances of a “fractured mandate” were high, he said.Mr. Siddaramaiah said pre-poll surveys also did not reflect the reality on the ground as they were not based on facts.The mere return of the former Chief Minister, B.S. Yeddyurappa, or the merger of the BSR Congress of the former Minister B. Sriramulu with the BJP did not mean that the saffron party would emerge stronger. He said the elections to the 28 Lok Sabha seats in the State could not be considered a referendum on “my government… I am confident that the government will last a full term”.
2)Gold biscuits seized, five held at city airport
Contraband valued at Rs. 66.29 lakh
Five persons were arrested and gold biscuits, valued at Rs.66.29 lakh, were seized from them by the Customs officers of the Air Intelligence Unit of Visakhapatnam International Airport.The accused persons, Syed Mohamed Doubic Ali, Manzoor Ali Chellakkani, Sagul Hameed, Ravutharnaina Mohamed and Sheik Mohamed Kasimbabu, arrived in the city by Air India Flight AI 952 from Dubai to Visakhapatnam via Hyderabad on March 8. They concealed contraband goods on their persons and in their baggage, according to a statement issued by Commissioner of Customs (Airport) C. Rajendran here on Monday.Biscuits handed over at HyderabadOn persistent questioning and thorough examination, it was revealed that Mazoor, Sagul, Ravtharnaina and Kasimbabu, who had boarded the flight at Hyderabad, concealed 22 gold biscuits in their rectums. Of these, 22 were of 100 gm each and one gold biscuit weighed 49.62 gm. The gold biscuits valued at Rs.66,29,979 were recovered from them and seized by Customs officers.Doubic Ali, who was coming from Dubai to Visakhapatnam, confessed that he handed over the gold biscuits to Kasimbabu on board the flight at Hyderabad, when the latter boarded the plane as a domestic passenger.All four passengers admitted that they received the gold biscuits on board the flight at Hyderabad.The accused have been placed under arrest and a transit remand obtained in order to enable production of the accused before the Special Economic Offences Court in Hyderabad.
3)SC sets deadline for trial of MPs and MLAs
To expedite proceedings against sitting MPs and MLAs in criminal cases, the Supreme Court on Monday asked lower courts to complete trial within a year of framing of charges.A Bench, headed by Justice R.M. Lodha, said trial courts would have to give an explanation to the Chief Justice of the respective High Court if the trial was not completed within a year. But the period could be extended by the Chief Justice if he was satisfied with the reason given by the trial judge. The Bench said because of delayed trial, lawmakers continued to enjoy membership of Parliament and the Assembly.The court passed the order on a PIL petition.
4)Drive yields three lakh voter applications
Three lakh people submitted applications seeking inclusion of their names in the voter list during the special drive in the State on Sunday.Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha told presspersons here on Monday that nearly three lakh applications, including 39,000 online, were received on Sunday.More than six lakh voters have submitted Form No 6 for inclusion of their names in the voter list since February 1. Electors Photo Identity Cards would be issued to all within 10-12 days, after field verification.In Bangalore, 79,000 people in 28 Assembly constituencies have submitted applications. The State has around 4.46 crore voters, as on January 31, 2014. March 16 is the last day for enrolment.Mr. Jha said that 54,261 polling stations would be established in the State. Sufficient number of electronic voting machines would be made available to ensure smooth polling.He said that the model code of conduct would not come in the way of ongoing works but the government has to take permission from the Election Commission of India for giving compensation to farmers for crop loss on account of the recent spell rain.
5)Aamir Khan approaches Mumbai police
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan on Sunday approached the Mumbai police after an alleged hate campaign was launched against him and his television show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ on social networking sites.The actor claimed that false and malicious messages were circulating on Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter saying the donations sought through his programmes were going to a trust working for people belonging to a particular religion.“I would like to clarify that all donations sought in SMJ are used and channelled for entirely deserving and secular causes, contrary to the content of the highly mischievous/malicious insinuations in the messages, being circulated by vested and unscrupulous interests,” Mr. Khan clarified on his official Facebook page.
6)Tata Power rights issue priced at Rs.60
The proposed rights issue of Tata Power Company has been priced at Rs.60 a share, the company said on Monday. The rights issue size would be 33.22 crore equity shares with a face value of Rs.1 each. An eligible shareholder will be entitled to apply for seven equity shares for every 50 equity shares held as on the record date. The entire rights issue price is payable on application and the issue will open on or before March 31. Tata Power shares, on Monday closed, with a loss of 0.25 per cent at Rs.78.95 on the BSE.
7)Nokia marks the X at Rs. 8,599
Finnish handset maker Nokia, on Monday, launched Nokia X, based on the Android operating system, in the domestic market with a price tag of Rs.8,599. Besides, the company said, it would introduce two more devices as part of the Nokia X family — Nokia X+ and Nokia XL. The dual SIM Nokia X is a 4-inch device, powered by a 1 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.It features a tile-based design, 512MB RAM, up to 32GB expandable memory, 3MP camera and 1500 mAH battery. Commenting on the launch, Nokia India Managing Director P. Balaji said, “India is one of the fastest growing markets for smart phones in the world. With the launch of Nokia X, we are adding more ammunition to our smartphone portfolio. We believe Nokia X is a unique combination of Nokia quality and experiences, Microsoft services and Android apps.” While the device is based on the Android open platform, Nokia X users will not have access to Google’s app market ‘Google Play’.However, they can sideload Android apps from third party app stores as well as Microsoft app store. Asked if the handset will eat into the business of its Asha range of affordable smartphones, Mr. Balaji answered in the negative.“Asha, Nokia X and the Lumia range are three separate offerings.“While the pricing of each of these will come down with time, they have their own set of features that offers value to a particular set of people,’’ he said, adding that the devices would help users experience Microsoft services like Skype and Outlook before they actually opt for the Lumia devices.
8)HTC Global to work with RBI
HTC Global Services, on Monday, said it would work with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for developing an Export Data Processing and Management System (EDPMS).The BPO services provider also announced the launch of Export Data Interfacing Solution (EDIS) that enables banks to comply to the new EDPMS, announced by the RBI on February 28.EDIS is a cost effective solution as it is developed on open source platform and is web based, the company said.
